So what are the steps for constructing one?
Step 1- Installing the posts:
The posts of the pergola can either be placed into a concrete pad or longer posts can be utilized so that these can be inserted into the ground directly. If a concrete pad is being used, then the positions for the posts should initially be marked with and then the posts should be screwed into the pad.
Step 2- Attaching the support beams and crossbeams:
The next step entails attaching the support and cross beams. First the support beams should be cut. For an 8 square ft pergola, support beams of 2 by 6 should be cut and the ends should be curved for which a template can be used to cut the curved shape. The beams should then be fixed into place on the posts on either side of the deck. Caution should be used to make sure that the beams are level. After this has been successfully done the cross beams can then be put in place. They should also be 2 by 6 and should be notched to fit over the support beams. The cross beams should be attached to the posts first and then to the support beams. Three similar cross beams should be attached with equal spacing between them.
Step 3-Post trim, braces and top slats
Post trim braces should be cut according to the appropriate width and length and should then be fixed into the posts. Braces should be made up of 2 by 6 stocks and fastened to the posts and beams with screws. Finally the top slats should be cut. Five 2 by 4 slats to length should be cut with ends given shape through a template. These slats should be clamped into place and attached.
Step 4-Posts should be capped:
Post caps should be cut. A simple square can be cut for this purpose and then given shape. These caps should then be secured on top of the posts with the appropriate nails.
